What the heck is Handmade at Amazon and is it right for me?
My clients come to me from one of three places in their Amazon journey. Which one are you?
(#1) - What is Handmade at Amazon? I didn't know you could sell Handmade on there?
(#2) - I applied, got logged in and freaked out because it was too confusing.
(#3) - I got my first listing up but I haven't done anything with it since.
I understand those concerns and I've been there. I got on the platform when they first opened so I had no guide, no mentor, no coach. After many years, I am a 7-figure annual Amazon seller and my #1 goal for you is to finish this course feeling like Handmade at Amazon can be conquered, and with tremendous growth and scale to your business.
Your Objections to Amazon Handmade
Trust me, I've heard them all. So lets get right to them, because I want you making informed decisions that are best for your business, and your business only!
100% not true. Handmade is a category on Amazon, just like Shoes or Pet Supplies. If someone searches Teacher Gift in the Amazon search bar, it will show items from all applicable categories, including Handmade. You do not have to go to a separate website to shop Handmade.
Does that mean you're going to land on Page 1? No, that takes work. Prove yourself, ship on time, get good reviews, master SEO. You're selling with the big dogs now BUT this means you're selling where 10x the buyers are over Etsy. Its lucrative and you can and will be found on the main Amazon site.
This is why you need a coach, someone who knows what they're talking about to advise you on big business decisions like joining Amazon. If this is what's been holding you back on so many lost years, you're going to be frustrated when you hear me say this:
Custom items do not have be accepted for returns. Items you ship yourself do not all have to be accepted for return. If you choose to do FBA, you are choosing to allow Amazon to handle all customer service, but if you fulfill your orders the same way you do on Etsy and Ms. Susie decided she changed her mind on her $200 embroidered custom blanket, you get to say "thanks but no thanks".
Have you looked at Etsy's fees lately? Have you ever compared the traffic to Etsy vs. Amazon? I will GLADLY pay Amazon their cut all day long for the number of eyes they bring to my products every single day.
If you don't have enough margin built into your Handmade products to sustain a minimal percentage fee increase, this course isn't right for you. When you've adjusted your pricing to reflect how hard you work and the skillset you've achieved, come back to me and the fees won't make you squirm.
I hear you, trust me. Be hear me out, please. Amazon buyers know and trust this platform. They expect the search results to show a certain way and they browse through the thumbnails so fast, a white background is the fastest way to get your items noticed. Its only the first image, so all of the work you've put into beautiful lifestyle photos can be used for all of the additional slots.
On the stringent side, my take is this. Buyers come to Amazon because they are stringent on their sellers. We must follow rules and for that I'm thankful. It brings the buyers right to me because I'm selling in a place they trust.
